Award winning research
New Zealand scientist Dr. Iona Weir’s award-winning research proving plants, unlike animals, undergo a program of cell death and renewal has led to the development and release of Atopis (pronounced a-toe-pis) – breakthrough range of creams that convince the human body’s immune system to repair the affected area.
Auckland-born Dr Weir’s research began 27 years ago with her PhD thesis on the process known as ‘apoptosis’, which later received grants from the Marsden Fund and then Callaghan Innovation to clinically trial an applicable extract preparation, known as Myriphytase (pronounced My-ra-fy-taze) -that would offer relief from the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Her global leadership in the biochemistry of New Zealand’s indigenous plants and microbes, combined with her advanced knowledge of eczema and the immune system, gave Dr. Weir the unique expertise to create a breakthrough cream for treating not just single symptoms but all of the parameters of eczema, acne and ageing to restore the skin back to normal function.
“Every single component has been meticulously put together to work in synergy and every reaction is based on these years of research,” Dr. Weir said.
“Eczema and other immune skin disorders are a combination of not just immune but also wound healing, apoptosis, and microbial recognition factors. I have taken a universal rather than a single parameter approach.”
“I was equally determined to provide robust clinical evidence from human trials that these natural products could provide relief, and that the ingredients were so safe you could even eat them,” explains Dr. Weir.
Meanwhile, with grandchildren suffering the painful effects of eczema, founder of NZX-listed National Property Trust and arts patron Paul Dallimore QSO supported Dr. Weir’s work and together with biotechnology businessman John Kitto, formed Decima to complete the development phase. Subsequently, all three and a group of prominent New Zealand investors formed Bionona as the global license company to bring the Atopis products to the online global marketplace.
Dr. Weir has an accomplished background as one of New Zealand’s leading science entrepreneurs, including developing LYP010 – a pharmaceutical oral drug developed in New Zealand for severe eczema cases. This pharmaceutical drug is currently in Phase 2B trials in the United States.
Dr. Weir was the Chief Scientific Officer to oversee the development, clinical trials and launch of Phloe – now the number one gastrointestinal health product in New Zealand’s over-the-counter laxative market.
“It’s been a long 27-year journey of research and numerous testing and trials,” Dr. Weir said. “But it’s all been worth it when you listen to people who have searched a long time to find something that finally delivers relief from their skin complaints.”
“The difference with Atopis is that it actually works and has clinical evidence to back it.”
